Castle in Drzewica

The Castle in Drzewica dates back to the 13th century when it was granted to Komes Gosław from the Ciołek family. However, it was Archbishop Maciej Drzewicki who built the castle in the 16th century, intending to surpass the royal strongholds in Opoczno and Inowłódz. This Gothic-Renaissance castle, surrounded by two moats, features four corner towers that played a significant role in its defense system.

Unfortunately, the northwest tower gained a dark reputation due to the inquisitive practices of witch hunts in the 17th century. Known as "Air Tests," people suspected of practicing magic were thrown from considerable heights. If the defendant floated, they were considered a witch, while a quick fall meant innocence. The castle is also said to be haunted by the spirit of Adam Drzewicki's daughter, known as the White Lady.

After several ownership changes, the castle and town were taken over by the Bernardine Sisters, but a tragic fire in 1814 ended their presence. Today, the beautifully restored ruins showcase the castle's 16th-century defensive design, with Renaissance gables, corner towers, and remnants of residential buildings.

Castle in Rawa Mazowiecka

The Castle in Rawa Mazowiecka was constructed at the end of the 14th century by Siemowit III to defend the southwestern borders of the Duchy of Mazovia. This castle has a tragic past intertwined with a tale that later inspired Shakespeare. Siemowit suspected his second wife, Lyudmila, of treason and ordered her death, realizing his mistake only after raising their son—Henryk—in ignorance. This sad story echoes in Shakespeare's play, "Winter's Tale."

Over time, the castle was rebuilt and used for various purposes, such as holding town courts and housing archives. Unfortunately, it was heavily damaged during the Swedish Deluge in the mid-17th century, and subsequent pillaging further deteriorated the building. While initiatives to repair and protect the castle began after World War II, today, only a small section of the outer walls and a tower with a museum exhibition remain.

Royal Castle in Inowłódz

The Royal Castle in Inowłódz was one of the many strongholds built during the reign of Casimir the Great. Its primary purpose was to protect the customs house located on the Pilica ford, an important trading route. Reconstructed in 1393, the castle underwent multiple renovations, with the Drzewicki family rebuilding it in the Renaissance style during the 16th century.

Throughout history, the castle changed hands several times, and during the Swedish Deluge, it was ultimately blown up as a result of revenge. For nearly 200 years, the building was left to decay until an industrialist from Łódź began removing stones from the ruins in the late 19th century. It wasn't until the 1970s that archaeological works began, and in 2007, protection and reconstruction efforts were initiated.

Today, the castle's basement and ground floor are home to a cultural center, tourist information, and a small museum. Visitors can explore the castle's ruins and immerse themselves in its fascinating history.
